When there is a will, there is a way!

class-on-the-lawn

Today I had a very unusual class! You want to know why? Here’s the story for you.

At 9.54 am I came to teach my class at Water Gardens in Santa Monica only to find out that I cannot access the building due to the on-going fire drill. Security workers posted outside the elevator doors told me that they couldn’t let my students already crowding in the hallway in front of the elevator and me into the gym during the drill.

I jokingly mentioned to my students that we should probably just dance on the lawn outside the building and surprisingly everyone liked the idea.

All the business people that work in the Water Gardens’ corporate buildings were outside due to the fire drill as well, decked out in their business suits. Some of them were sitting on the lawn chairs, some were standing around talking or reading at the bar. Some guys were tossing a football to kill the time.

We disrupted the monotony by breaking into our dance routine! I used my iPhone for music. I put my headset on, so I was the only one that could hear music. The students did a great job keeping up with me by feeling and following my rhythm and movements. I guided them with my hand gestures and subtle voice cues.

The whole lawn stopped doing whatever they were doing and just stared at us! Everybody smiled. Some people took pictures.

I loved how we drew a crowd even though they couldn’t hear the music that was playing in my head. The rhythm of the dance spoke for itself!

After about 10 minutes or so we went back inside the gym and the rest of the class joined in on the fun!

I’ve always wanted to dance and have a class on the lawn ever since they finished construction of the building and today I DID dance on the lawn with my students! It was lots of FUN!!!

As they say “When there’s a will, there’s a way”. OR “The Show Must Go ON!” 😉
